The faculty and staff on the Providence Campus of Johnson & Wales are making a tremendous impact on our neighboring communities, through their personal and professional contributions. Casual for Community The Spring 2008 Casual for Community Day raised $480.00 for South Providence Neighborhood Ministries (SPNM). SPNM services families in the South Side of Providence, meeting basic needs by providing food and emergency financial assistance for rent and utilities. It also provides a youth program that strives for academic excellence. The program offers a safe environment, encourages non-violent problem solving and conflict resolution skills and provides enrichment and fun for the children. JWU students assist in after school programs by helping the children with homework, supervising playtime and serving both snacks and meals. This spring 2008 term we had over 30 CSL students participating at this site. The Casual for Community program is designed to enable staff and faculty to partner in the valuable work done by the Providence area nonprofit agencies that serve as Community Service-Learning (CSL) sites for our students. Thank you to all the faculty and staff who participated from many departments on making Casual for Community a success. Surplus Supplies JWU staff generously looked for opportunities to donate surplus supplies to community agencies. Through their alertness, we have been able to donate used furniture, books, office supplies, flower arrangements and computers to community agencies. Thank you for remembering our community partners and being alert to opportunities to "recycle" resources for the benefit of those in need! Interested? Are you a JWU employee and would like to learn more about a volunteer site? Would you like to speak with a fellow employee who volunteers at one of these sites? Would you like to pass along information on agencies in which you are involved? Email us!
